Ron Shirley, best known for sharing the ins-and-outs of his business Lizard Lick Towing & Recovery in Wendell, NC, has revealed his son Harley is “at peace now” after reportedly being killed.
His job on the truTV reality show saw him track down and repossess vehicles and machinery, while his wife Amy usually dealt with the irate property owners at the Lizard Lick headquarters.
From 2011 to 2014, Ron allowed cameras to document the true nature of their job. Eight years on since filming wrapped up forever, he has announced the death of his son Harley.
In response to the shocking news, fans everywhere have been paying tribute.
Who was Harley Shirley?
Harley Alexander Shirley was Ron and Amy’s 21-year-old son, who they called “Big Shur” or “Alex”. From Clayton, North Carolina, he appeared alongside his family on truTV’s Lizard Lick Towing from 2011 to 2014.
He described a woman who appears to be his mom as “his rock”, which was the last Instagram post before his death. Harley had 1.8K followers on Instagram, and has shared pictures of close family members.
Ron’s son was often seen hanging out with his friends and family. Born on January 24th 2001, Harley recently died on February 17th 2022. His loved ones are paying tribute after his death.
What happened to Ron’s son?
Ron claimed his son died in a shooting, which left another person injured. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said one person died when someone opened fire during a memorial balloon release on Thursday night.
As reported by The Sun, Harley was fatally shot at a North Carolina gas station. The shooting happened at a balloon release in honor of Xavier Smith, who was killed in a crash earlier this week.
Police had attended a shooting at a home on Josephine Road in Johnston County.
The family told WRAL News the shooting took place on the front lawn and then several men jumped into a car and drove away. Later, there was a second call made to police about gunshot victims, which was found to be related.
Harley Shirley was pronounced dead at the scene, on N.C. Highway 42 and Cornwallis Road. Jason Shirley, his uncle, has said he is offering a $25,000 reward for information regarding his nephew’s death.

Lizard Lick Towing fans pay tribute
Upon hearing the news, hundreds of loved ones and fans have paid their respects to Alex’s family, while sharing fond memories of Ron Shirley’s son. Some reacted and said they have “no words”.
One fan wrote: “I’ve watched y’all since y’all’s first episode and this hit at home. Almost like I’ve known y’all all my life. Sorry for your loss brother!”
“I’m so sorry for your loss Ron, to you and your family. He’s watching you from above, he’s in a better world now“, wrote another shocked viewer.
“God, during the darkest hours you can bring hope and healing. I pray for Ronnie and Amy, who have lost such an amazing son, Alex. Please shine your light as we honor and remember Alex, who is in your loving arms“, penned a fan.
A visitation for Alex will be held Saturday February 26th 2022 from 12pm to 1.30pm at McLaurin Funeral Home, 12830 US 70 Bus Hwy W, Clayton, NC 27520, before a graveside service at 2pm at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
