Prithviraj Kapoor was an Indian film actor, producer and director, who is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. He was the first member of the Kapoor family of Bollywood actors, which includes his sons Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor, and his grandsons, actors Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor, and Kunal Kapoor. Kapoor began his career as an actor in the silent era of Hindi cinema with the film Inquilab in 1935. He went on to appear in over 100 films in a career spanning five decades. He was the first Indian actor to be referred to as a "superstar", and is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. Kapoor was born in Samundri, Punjab, British India, to a Hindu Punjabi family. He was the eldest of six children born to Dewan Basheshwarnath Kapoor and his wife, Lalbai. He was the great-grandson of Dewan Keshavmal Kapoor, and the grandnephew of actor Trilok Kapoor. Kapoor began his career as an actor in the silent era of Hindi cinema with the film Inquilab in 1935. He went on to appear in over 100 films in a career spanning five decades. He was the first Indian actor to be referred to as a "superstar", and is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. Kapoor was married to Ramsarni Mehra in 1930. The couple had three sons, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor, and two daughters, Urmila Sial and Krishna Kapoor. He died on 29 May 1988 at the age of 81.
